SOUTH AFRICA SERVICE TRIP Purpose The purpose of this mission to South Africa is to promote global awareness, community service, strengthen leadership skills, and heighten social/cultural awareness within students by establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships between students and South Africa. Students will then utilize the joint resources and experiences to strengthen, support, educate, and empower themselves into becoming service oriented global citizens. They will return home inspired and more connected to the world as they advocate social justice and change within their lives, their community, and ultimately the world. Impact After participating in this global community service and social awareness mission, students will have expanded their thinking of community service to a global perspective and will have experienced first-hand the cultural traditions and adversity and opportunity for social change that exists within a community much like theirs; they will have learned the rich history of South Africa and its natives' fight for liberation and opportunity by exploring the wealth of knowledge at the local museums, and historical sites and from residents and leaders of those communities. They will have journeyed local villages, mountainsides and natural history sites while gaining insight on the oppressed and the South African world. They will have formed meaningful connections with individuals in Soweto, Johannesburg, Acornhoek, and Cape Town through mindful and meaningful collaboration and community service projects at schools and orphanages; they will have formed a foundation to develop their global perspective and strengthen their dedication to community engagement as they act as instruments of change within and beyond their communities using their attained 21st century skills.
